Trade-off mapping to implement sustainable mixed cropping

This project addresses three interrelated challenges that limit an increased uptake of mixed cropping in the European agriculture: The fragmented single-metric evidence base of mixed cropping; rising production risks; and the evidence-to-practice gap.
TROMISC (Trade-off Mapping to Implement Sustainable Mixed Cropping) investigates how mixed cropping of cereals and pulses can contribute to more productive, resilient, and sustainable agricultural systems. By analyzing one of Europe's largest mixed-cropping datasets, the project evaluates environmental, economic, and social benefits and trade-offs, including impacts on soil fertility, biodiversity, resource use, and farm performance. TROMISC will translate scientific evidence into practical guidance through a planned open-access online platform, helping farmers identify and implement mixed-cropping systems that best suit their local conditions and sustainability goals.
