The first external pageEIT Food Impact Awards were awarded in Málaga, Spain in October 2021. The awards were developed to recognise and celebrate the work of the EIT Food community by celebrating activities that are making a real difference and transforming food systems. Projects were recognized in four categories (dietary change, trust conditions, circular economy and environmental impact) and evaluated for impact, accessibility, scalability and creativity/innovativeness. The final winners were then selected by participants at the annual EIT Food Partner Event.

Phenoliva turns the side-stream management problem of the olive oil industry into a great opportunity. Antioxidants extracted from olive side-streams are used in foods and cosmetics as valuable natural additives. Full circularity is achieved by including biogas production and soil health as key pillars in the Phenoliva concept.

The highly interdisciplinary Phenoliva consortium is formed by eight partners from five European countries and is coordinated by the  ETH Zurich Laboratory of Food Biochemistry. At the event, project manager Claudio Reinhard accepted the award.

The Phenoliva project consortium recently held a seminar entitled DownloadCircularity in the Olive Industry (PDF, 313 KB) on 27 September 2021. Participants in Sevilla and online guests learned about today’s challenges and new opportunities in the olive sector and beyond. Experts presented their experience and recent research in different fields. Social, economic and environmental aspects were discussed. Roundtable discussions allowed a high level of interaction. A pilot plant tour at Instituto de la Grasa provided unique insights into current research in the field of agricultural side-stream valorisation.
