The Smart Sustainable Farming Research Program aims to contribute to sustainable, innovative and competitive agricultural production and increase transparency from agricultural production to consumers.

With this initiative, fenaco is supporting the establishment of the Smart Sustainable Farming Research Cluster at the World Food System Center with a total of 1.2 million Swiss Francs over the next six years, thus enabling several interdisciplinary projects at the interface of agriculture, sustainable production systems, robotics and artificial intelligence.

A call for proposals for the program is now open until 31 March 2023. This call aims to fund up to 3 projects of 2 to 4 years duration (doctoral and postdoc projects possible), with a maximum budget of 200’000 CHF per project.

Professors and Senior Researchers at ETH Zurich are invited to submit research proposals addressing one or more of the following topics:

  • Reducing the footprint of agricultural production
  • Strengthening the quality of products and improving transparency along the production process
  • Improving the competitiveness of sustainably produced products
  • Strengthening biodiversity
  • Reduction of the climate impact of production and strengthening the resilience of agricultural production to climate change.

The interdisciplinary research approach should combine at least two research groups, ideally combining an agronomic perspective with a technical, computational, data-based, or socio-economic perspective.

To submit a proposal to this call, the Principal Investigator (PI) must be a researcher of ETH Zurich. Non-members of the WFSC are welcome to submit proposals, however, if the application is successful, they are required to become a member to benefit from all communication and outreach activities related to the program.
