Introducing the food system

First and foremost, the Food System Journey Website highlights how everything in our food system is connected and why understanding these connections is crucial for increasing sustainability. A sustainable food system should nourish us while ensuring environmental protection and social well-being.

The path our food takes from cultivation to consumption encompasses numerous stages: cultivation, processing, transporting, marketing, consuming, and disposing of waste. This intricate process involves many individuals.

Collaboration among all stakeholders is essential, from farmers and industry workers to politicians, researchers, and consumers. By leveraging this collective expertise, sustainable solutions can be developed at both local and global levels.

Explore the Food System Journey

The Food System Journey website offers an interactive exploration of the food system. Through various graphics and stories, visitors can learn about food production and processing, as well as the challenges faced along the way. The site also showcases innovative solutions from research at ETH Zurich, such as:

  • The effect of soil tillage on agriculture
  • Sustainable pest control using beneficial organisms, such as fungi or bacteria
  • Microalgae as a future sustainable protein source
  • Recovering nutrients from urban waste for agriculture

The aim is to inspire us all to play a part in transforming the way we produce, process, and consume food sustainably.

A collaborative creation

This website was inspired by content of the Science on Your Plate exhibition at Mühlerama in Zurich, curated by the World Food System Center.

The Food System Journey website was envisioned by the Center’s Executive Office team and developed by former Project Intern Jan Streit. Content editing and publication was completed by Jeanne Tomaszewski and Billie Maude Hauser.

The website will be regularly updated with new research projects focused on food systems, continually sharing the latest solutions from ETH Zurich for a sustainable future.
